Tamil Nadu Ends Saturday Duty at 100 Sub-Registrar Offices from 1 November 2026

Tamil Nadu Ends Saturday Duty at 100 Sub-Registrar Offices from 1 November 2026

The Tamil Nadu Registration Department has discontinued compulsory Saturday duty at 100 sub-registrar offices with effect from 1 November 2026. Reports state that a Government Order issued on 1 October 2026 by the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department formalised the decision, following an announcement in the Assembly on 7 September 2026.

What has changed

  • These 100 offices had worked on Saturdays since 2022 to help people who could not register documents on weekdays.
  • From 1 November 2026 they follow the regular Monday to Friday schedule.
  • The department links the move to the expansion of presenceless and paperless registration and to a rationalisation of office workload.

Wider reforms announced with it

Reports on the Registration Department’s reforms mention 25 Model Registration Hubs with modern infrastructure to reduce queues. The department also plans to rationalise sub-registrar jurisdictions so that each revenue village falls within a single registration jurisdiction.

Practical points for buyers, sellers and NRIs

  • Check whether your sub-registrar office was among the 100 offices before planning a Saturday appointment.
  • Book slots for weekday registration early, especially for auspicious dates when demand rises.
  • Eligible documents can now be registered online without visiting the office, which helps NRIs and others who live away from the registration district.
  • Where a visit is unavoidable, a registered Power of Attorney executed and authenticated as required can be considered. Take legal advice on its scope first.

The list of affected offices and the detailed Government Order should be confirmed from the Registration Department’s official notice before you rely on any date.
