Madras High Court warned the criminal process of civic Bodies for manual scavenger deaths
The Madras High Court, which noted the deaths that occurred due to manual scavenging throughout the country, has now warned civil bodies of the possibility of criminal processes against them if and when death occurs in their jurisdiction.
Tamil Nadu state government to submit a report to prevent manual scavengers
Not only that, but the High Court has also directed the Tamil Nadu state government to submit a report that states the steps that begin to prevent manual scavengers in each and every district.
The court bench passed the order in connection with the request by Safai Karamchari Andolan which stated that 14 people had died of manual scavenging in Tamil Nadu in 2020. It was also said so far, six people have died of manual scavenging in 2021.
While expressing disappointment over the state of affairs related to the manual scavenger incident in the city that occurs constantly. The bench said that it was time for cities corporation and Municipalities held personally responsible for the death of manual scavengers that occurred in their Jurisdiction.
The court said that the government must now submit a detailed report within six weeks including the steps taken to prevent manual scavenging. Also, the state has been requested by the court to provide compensation to the families of those who lost their lives.
